Digital product passport for the circular economy

Digitalisation and automation increase production efficiency. But that’s not all: this combination also offers enormous potential for the circular economy. New standards are being set in this area by a "smart" turnkey system that is part of the R-Cycle project.

A computer-networked ALLROUNDER 370 A injection moulding machine produces printed cups. As a result, the turnkey system is an example of how plastic products can be produced with process reliability, custom-finished inline, made fully traceable and separated by type – thereby closing the cycle of recyclable materials.

At the heart of the turnkey system is a computer-networked ALLROUNDER 370 A injection moulding machine. It is possible to choose from three different images on a tablet in order to customise what is printed on the surface of each cup.
To the electric machines

Robotic system
A MULTILIFT V 20 Cartesian robot performs the automation tasks. Once they are removed from the mould, the cups are first sent for plasma treatment and then make their way to a digital printing station. This means that the product enhancement stage is integrated directly into the production cell.
To the linear robots

ARBURG Turnkey Control Module (ATCM)
The ATCM SCADA system gathers all data relating to processes and recycling in real time and amalgamates it for each specific part. At the same time, an event is created for R-Cycle and a digital product passport is produced. This makes each individual cup 100 percent traceable.
To digital transformation


The cornerstone of the R-Cycle joint project is a database containing recycling-related information. Data relating to aspects such as raw materials and colouring agents are transmitted as early as the injection moulding stage, and each cup then receives its own machine-readable DM code. The digital product passport enables recycling materials to be precisely sorted for reprocessing in the recycling process.
