On Thursday 20th November, ARBURG held a technical seminar day at the First Polymer training facility in Athlone. The event attracted delegates from a wide spectrum of the Irish moulding industry. After a brief introduction from ARBURG, Reiner Heendendeniya from Gunther presented some new innovative gate designs and offered an overview on gating in medical moulding. This presentation was followed by Gary Blackett from ARBURG who concentrated the technology behind the ARBURG ALLDRIVE modular drive electric machine range and a number of case studies outlining selection data and actual criteria for hydraulic and electric machine technology.

After a coffee break, the third presentation was given from Stephen O'Leary from FPT who discussed ‘best practice’ and offered his long experience and observations in terms of areas of operation that companies can concentrate on to maximise efficiencies within moulding process and associated operations and equipment. Rounding off the morning's presentation was Derek Watts from Distrupol who gave an overview on the material selection process and underlined the importance of optimum selection at an early stage of the project.

The showroom was set up to offer a practical demonstration during lunchtime on a new ALLROUNDER 370 A 600-170, 60ton modular drive electric machine. This machine has recently been placed in the facility for training FPT's trainees. The demonstration from Gary Blackett and Stephen O'Leary on the machine demonstrated the importance of pressure curves and monitoring in the moulding process.

The afternoon session continued with Roja Wall from Momentive LSR who discussed the importance and possibilities of utilising LSR materials and grades in the medical sector. The final presentation was from Reiner Westhoff from Contura who gave a good overview of the potential of 'conforming cooling' in tooling and applications with case studies.
